Tsai Ming-liang’s What Time Is It There? follows Hsiao-kang, a young Taipei street vendor mourning his recently deceased father. After meeting a woman who is preparing to travel to Paris, he becomes fascinated by the idea of synchronizing his watch with the time in France. As she navigates an unfamiliar city, Hsiao-kang remains in Taipei, compulsively resetting clocks to Paris time. Through their parallel but disconnected lives, Tsai meditates on grief, loneliness, desire, and the elusive connections between people separated by distance and time.
