Edward Yang’s Taipei Story follows Lung, a former baseball player who now runs a fabric business, and his longtime partner Chin, a young woman working for a real-estate company. Their relationship begins to deteriorate as Chin becomes increasingly frustrated with Lung’s conservative outlook and attachment to the past. When Chin’s office is relocated and she considers moving to the United States, Lung struggles to accept her desire for a different life. Meanwhile, his business falters, an old baseball friend draws him into a dubious financial scheme, and Chin’s relationships with younger colleagues further widen the distance between them. As Taipei undergoes rapid redevelopment and social change, the couple’s unraveling becomes a poignant portrait of people unable to reconcile their personal histories with an uncertain modern future.
