About

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s A Summer at Grandpa’s follows two young siblings, Ting-Ting and Tung-Tung, who are sent from Taipei to stay with their grandfather in the Taiwanese countryside while their mother cares for their seriously ill father. Removed from their familiar urban environment, the children gradually immerse themselves in rural life, encountering local children, family tensions, and unfamiliar experiences that challenge their sheltered perspective. Through their adventures and observations, Hou evokes the wonder, confusion, and quiet melancholy of childhood while reflecting on family, memory, and the passage from innocence toward maturity.
