About

A Brighter Summer Day is Edward Yang’s expansive coming-of-age drama, set in Taipei in the early 1960s amid the political tensions and social dislocation of postwar Taiwan. At its center is Si’r, a troubled adolescent from a mainland Chinese family whose life revolves around school, street gangs, American popular culture, and his growing fascination with Ming, a beautiful but emotionally troubled girl. Si’r becomes increasingly involved with the 217 gang and its charismatic leader, Honey, while his friendships and loyalties are tested by rivalry, violence, and romantic jealousy. At home, his father struggles with work and the pressures of authoritarian society, while the family confronts the uncertainty of life in exile. Drawing on a real 1961 murder that shocked Taiwan, Yang interweaves youthful rebellion with a broader portrait of a generation growing up between Chinese traditions and an increasingly Americanized modern culture.
