About
Edward Yang’s Yi Yi follows three generations of the Jian family in contemporary Taipei as they confront love, loss, regret, and the uncertainties of everyday life. When the grandmother falls into a coma, the family’s carefully ordered existence begins to unravel: N.J. questions the compromises of marriage and work, his wife retreats into a spiritual crisis, while their children, Ting-Ting and Yang-Yang, grapple with first love, guilt, curiosity, and the discovery of their own identities. Moving between these generations, Yang explores the limits of human understanding and the gap between how we see ourselves and how others see us. The film’s intimate family drama becomes a profound meditation on mortality, memory, loneliness, love, and the passage of time, suggesting that ordinary life is shaped as much by what remains unseen and unspoken as by what we experience directly.
