A Confucian Confusion is a satirical ensemble drama by Edward Yang that examines Taipei’s affluent urban society through a web of intertwined relationships, ambitions, and betrayals. The story centers on Molly, a young businesswoman who runs a cultural company with her sister, and her circle of friends and colleagues, whose professional and romantic lives repeatedly collide. Molly’s idealistic but increasingly frustrated outlook contrasts with the opportunism of those around her, including a television producer, an ambitious playwright, and various lovers and business partners. As careers, affairs, friendships, and commercial interests become entangled, the characters struggle to reconcile personal desires with the social expectations of contemporary Taiwan. Blending sharp comedy with social observation, Yang uses their confusion to explore the gap between traditional Confucian values and the individualism, consumerism, and moral uncertainty of rapidly modernizing Taipei.
