About
Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Dust in the Wind follows Wan and Huen, two young people from a rural Taiwanese mining town who leave home for Taipei in search of work and a more promising future. Their close friendship gradually develops into a quiet romantic attachment, but their lives begin to diverge as Huen leaves for military service and Wan struggles with the demands of adulthood. As family obligations, separation, and unforeseen tragedy reshape their hopes, Hou portrays the fragile transition from youth to maturity against the changing landscape of Taiwan. Through its restrained storytelling and evocation of memory, the film becomes a poignant meditation on love, loss, and the inexorable passage of time.
