About

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Good Men, Good Women follows Liang Ching, a young Taiwanese actress preparing to portray a historical figure in a film about the Chinese resistance in Japanese-occupied Taiwan. As she works on the production, anonymous messages and photographs force her to confront the unresolved memory of her murdered lover and her own troubled past. The film moves between the present-day production, historical episodes of wartime resistance, and Liang’s personal memories, gradually intertwining private grief with Taiwan’s larger political history. Hou uses this layered structure to explore memory, trauma, guilt, and the difficult process of confronting a nation's past.
