About

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s The Boys from Fengkuei follows four young men from a small fishing village who, with few prospects and little direction, leave home for the port city of Kaohsiung. Drawn into an unfamiliar urban environment, they drift between casual work, friendship, romance, and youthful mischief. Their lives begin to change when Ah-Ching becomes involved with a young woman whose troubled relationship forces him to confront the uncertainties of adulthood. Through its understated observation of ordinary life, the film explores youth, displacement, friendship, and the difficult transition from rural innocence to urban modernity.
