Tsai Ming-liang’s Rebels of the Neon God follows Hsiao-kang, the academically pressured son of a Taipei taxi driver, whose sheltered life is disrupted when he witnesses a group of young vandals damaging his father’s cab. After recognizing one of them, Ah-tze, Hsiao-kang abandons his college-preparatory studies and becomes increasingly obsessed with pursuing him. Their paths intersect with Ah-tze’s brother Ah-ping and his girlfriend Ah-kuei, petty thieves navigating Taipei’s nocturnal underworld. Against a rain-soaked, alienating urban landscape, the film explores youthful disaffection, isolation, and the uneasy transformation of contemporary Taipei.
