About
Tsai Ming-liang’s The Hole is set in a rain-soaked Taipei seven days before the arrival of the new millennium, as a mysterious epidemic forces residents to evacuate their apartment building. A man and a woman remain in neighboring flats, separated by a hole that a plumber accidentally opens between their floors. As they gradually become aware of one another, their isolation gives way to an uneasy, largely unspoken connection. Blending apocalyptic anxiety, deadpan humor, musical fantasy, and urban melancholy, Tsai portrays loneliness and the fragile possibility of intimacy amid a city marked by disease, decay, and social disconnection.
