About
Tsai Ming-liang’s The River follows Hsiao-kang, a young man who develops a mysterious and increasingly debilitating neck pain after serving as an actor in a film shoot. As his condition worsens, he moves between doctors, hospitals, and his family home, while his parents struggle with their own profound loneliness and estrangement. His father secretly seeks intimacy in Taipei’s gay nightlife, while his mother retreats into an isolated existence of her own. Blending physical illness with emotional and sexual alienation, Tsai constructs a bleak portrait of a family whose members inhabit the same spaces yet remain profoundly disconnected.
