About
Tsai Ming-liang’s I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone follows Hsiao-kang, an immigrant worker in Kuala Lumpur who is attacked and left injured by a group of men. Rescued by Bangladeshi laborers, he is taken in by Rawang, who cares for him in an abandoned building. Meanwhile, Hsiao-kang becomes involved with a young waitress, creating an uneasy triangle of desire and dependency. As the characters struggle against poverty, illness, and isolation, an old mattress becomes a shared refuge and a fragile symbol of intimacy. Set amid Kuala Lumpur’s multicultural urban margins, the film explores displacement, loneliness, and the precarious forms of connection that emerge between outsiders.
