Tsai Ming-Liang
Tsai Ming-Liang (born 1957) is a Malaysian-Taiwanese director and a leading figure of the Second New Wave of Taiwanese cinema. After studying drama in Taipei and working in television, he turned to feature filmmaking in the early 1990s, developing a contemplative style of static long takes, near-wordless performances by a small ensemble of regular actors, and a fascination with water, isolation, and the body in space. His later work has moved into gallery installation and slow cinema. His acclaimed films include Vive L'Amour, The River, The Hole, Goodbye, Dragon Inn, and Stray Dogs.
