Tsai Ming-liang’s The Wayward Cloud unfolds in a sweltering Taipei suffering from a severe water shortage, where Hsiao-kang works as a pornographic actor while selling watermelons on the side. He encounters Shiang-chyi, a woman he previously knew, and the two gradually reconnect amid the city’s oppressive heat and pervasive loneliness. Their tentative relationship unfolds alongside surreal musical interludes and increasingly explicit encounters, culminating in a disturbing convergence of intimacy, performance, and alienation. Blending eroticism, black comedy, and absurdity, Tsai presents a bleak vision of desire and human connection in a commodified urban world.
