About

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Daughter of the Nile follows Xiao-yang, a young woman working at a fast-food restaurant in Taipei while caring for her younger brother after their father’s death. Increasingly detached from her family and uncertain about her future, she becomes involved with her brother’s delinquent friends and drifts into the city’s nocturnal world. Her brother’s involvement with a criminal gang brings further danger and instability, while Xiao-yang retreats into fantasies inspired by the manga Crest of the Royal Family. Set against Taipei’s rapidly changing urban landscape, the film portrays youthful alienation, family disintegration, and the uneasy transition into modernity.
