Edward Yang
Edward Yang (1947–2007) was a Taiwanese director, screenwriter, and engineer, a central figure of the Taiwan New Wave alongside Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Trained as an engineer in the United States, he returned to Taiwan in the early 1980s and brought a precise, architectural eye to ensemble dramas of urban middle-class life in Taipei. His features chart the cultural transformations of postwar Taiwan with patient long takes and an exceptional understanding of social space. His acclaimed films include That Day, on the Beach, Taipei Story, The Terrorizers, A Brighter Summer Day, Mahjong, and Yi Yi.
