About

Set in Korea during the 1930s, under Japanese colonial rule, The Handmaiden follows Sook-hee, a young pickpocket recruited by a con man known as Count Fujiwara to assist in an elaborate scheme. Posing as a maid, she is sent to the secluded estate of Lady Hideko, a wealthy Japanese heiress who lives under the oppressive authority of her uncle, Kouzuki. Fujiwara intends to seduce Hideko, marry her for her fortune, and have her committed to an asylum, with Sook-hee helping to secure his plan. As Sook-hee becomes increasingly close to Hideko, however, the carefully constructed deception begins to unravel. Their growing intimacy complicates Sook-hee’s loyalties and exposes the emotional and psychological manipulation underlying the scheme. As the story unfolds through shifting perspectives and revelations, alliances are repeatedly overturned, and the apparent distinction between deceiver and victim becomes increasingly uncertain. What begins as a calculated act of fraud develops into a complex struggle for autonomy, in which the two women must confront the forces of patriarchal control, sexual exploitation, and inherited power that threaten to determine their lives.
