About

Set in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), Joint Security Area begins with a deadly shooting at a border outpost, where two North Korean soldiers are killed and a South Korean soldier is wounded. With the two sides offering contradictory accounts of the incident, Major Sophie E. Jean, a Swiss-Korean officer serving with the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission, is assigned to investigate. Through interviews, conflicting testimonies, and flashbacks, Sophie gradually uncovers a secret friendship between South and North Korean soldiers who have been meeting across the heavily guarded border. Their clandestine encounters reveal a bond that transcends the political divisions separating them, transforming the investigation into a tragic exploration of loyalty, fear, and the consequences of ideological conflict. As the truth emerges, the film exposes the devastating tension between personal relationships and military duty, revealing how a moment of human connection can become entangled in the hostility and suspicion imposed by national division.
