About

Set in nineteenth-century Korea, Painted Fire chronicles the turbulent life of Jang Seung-eop, known by his artistic name Owon, a gifted painter whose unconventional temperament challenges the rigid social hierarchy of the Joseon dynasty. After recognizing the young Seung-eop’s extraordinary talent, the scholar Kim Byung-moon becomes his mentor, encouraging him to develop his artistic abilities despite the constraints imposed by class, tradition, and political authority. As Seung-eop gains recognition, his artistic reputation grows alongside his personal instability. Drawn to alcohol, women, and a life of restless independence, he struggles to reconcile his creative ambitions with the expectations of patrons and the aristocratic society that supports his work. His relationships with several women and his encounters with political upheaval further complicate his search for artistic freedom. Through his passionate devotion to painting and his resistance to conventional respectability, Seung-eop emerges as a restless figure whose genius is inseparable from his contradictions and self-destructive impulses.
