About
The film is the first installment of Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance follows Ryu, a deaf factory worker who desperately needs money for a kidney transplant for his ailing sister. After losing his job and finding that his own kidney is incompatible with hers, he becomes involved in an illegal organ-trading scheme. With the help of his girlfriend, Yeong-mi, he kidnaps the young daughter of his former employer, Park Dong-jin, intending to use the ransom to pay for his sister’s operation. What begins as a desperate attempt to save a life soon spirals into catastrophe when an unforeseen accident leads to the child’s death. Consumed by grief, Dong-jin embarks on a relentless quest for revenge against those he believes responsible. Meanwhile, Ryu and Yeong-mi become trapped in an escalating cycle of violence, as each act of retribution generates further suffering. Their intersecting paths expose the devastating consequences of desperation, loss, and moral compromise, leaving no character untouched by the violence they unleash.
