About
Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Millennium Mambo follows Vicky, a young woman drifting through Taipei’s nightlife at the turn of the millennium. Trapped in a turbulent and possessive relationship with Hao-hao, she moves between clubs, bars, and apartments in search of freedom and emotional independence, while her memories and relationships gradually blur together. Narrated retrospectively from the future, the film captures the fleeting rhythms of youth and urban life through hypnotic images, electronic music, and long, fluid takes. Hou transforms Vicky’s aimless existence into a meditation on desire, alienation, memory, and the passage of time.
