About

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Goodbye South, Goodbye follows Gao, a small-time hustler, and his companions as they drift between Taipei and the Taiwanese countryside, pursuing a series of dubious schemes in search of quick money. Their plans repeatedly falter, revealing a generation caught between traditional ways of life and an increasingly commercialized, modern society. As friendships and loyalties begin to fray, the characters confront the uncertainty of a future in which familiar social structures are rapidly disappearing. With its loose narrative, observational style, and elliptical storytelling, Hou portrays the aimlessness and dislocation of Taiwan’s younger generation during a period of rapid economic and social change.
