About
Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Flowers of Shanghai unfolds almost entirely within the lavish private rooms of Shanghai’s nineteenth-century courtesan houses, where wealthy male patrons maintain relationships with courtesans bound by complex arrangements of affection, jealousy, and financial dependence. Over the course of several evenings, the intertwined lives of patrons and courtesans reveal a world governed by ritual, hierarchy, and emotional negotiation. Eschewing conventional dramatic exposition, Hou relies on long takes, luminous candlelit interiors, and carefully composed tableaux to evoke the enclosed atmosphere of this vanished social world. Beneath its elegance, the film offers a subtle meditation on desire, possession, power, and the constraints imposed by social convention.
