About
Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Café Lumière follows Yōko, a young Japanese writer living in Tokyo, as she navigates an independent life while researching the Taiwanese composer Jiang Wenye. Her growing pregnancy and unconventional relationship with the father of her child create a subtle tension with her parents, who worry about her future. Meanwhile, she maintains a close friendship with Hajime, a record-shop owner fascinated by Tokyo’s railway system and urban sounds. Set against the rhythms of everyday life, Hou’s quiet, observational film explores friendship, family, independence, and the changing cultural landscape of contemporary Tokyo.
