Burning follows Lee Jong-su, an aspiring novelist who encounters Shin Hae-mi, a young woman he knew during childhood. Their tentative connection deepens when Hae-mi returns from a trip to Africa accompanied by Ben, a wealthy and enigmatic man whose effortless confidence contrasts sharply with Jong-su's precarious existence. When Hae-mi subsequently disappears, Jong-su becomes increasingly suspicious of Ben, particularly after Ben casually reveals an unsettling hobby involving the burning of abandoned greenhouses. Unable to determine whether Ben's confession is literal, metaphorical, or a veiled threat, Jong-su begins investigating him, gradually descending into obsession and paranoia. As the mystery deepens, the film leaves crucial questions unanswered, drawing the viewer into Jong-su's uncertain perception of events. The narrative becomes a haunting exploration of jealousy, class resentment, loneliness, and the violence that can emerge when suspicion takes the place of knowledge.
