Kim Ki-duk
Kim Ki-duk (1960–2020) was a South Korean director and screenwriter whose confrontational, often controversial features were a recurring presence on the international festival circuit. Largely self-taught, with a background in painting that fed his strong sense of composition, he produced fables of monks, prostitutes, and social outcasts that combined Buddhist allegory with violent, almost wordless drama. His acclaimed films include The Isle, Bad Guy, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring, Samaritan Girl, 3-Iron, and Pieta, which won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2012.
