About
In 1828, the ailing and deaf Francisco de Goya lives in self-imposed exile in Bordeaux, France, accompanied by his companion Leocadia and their daughter Rosario. As he approaches the end of his life, he recounts episodes from his past, revisiting his rise as a court painter under Charles IV, his passionate relationship with the Duchess of Alba, and the political turmoil that shaped both his personal life and artistic vision. Through conversations with Rosario, memories, and hallucinatory visions, Goya retraces the evolution of his work, from the brilliance of royal portraiture to the darker imagery inspired by suffering, war, and human folly. Portrayed by Francisco Rabal in old age and José Coronado in his youth, Goya emerges as a complex figure whose memories reveal the intimate connection between his art, his imagination, and the turbulent history of Spain.
