Carlos Saura
Carlos Saura (1932–2023) was a Spanish director, screenwriter, and photographer who shaped postwar Spanish cinema across more than sixty years. Trained as a photographer before turning to filmmaking, he made his name with allegorical dramas that used family stories to circumvent Franco-era censorship and probe Spain's authoritarian present. From the 1980s onward he combined this dramatic strand with a celebrated series of flamenco and tango films that fused dance, music, and cinema. His acclaimed films include The Hunt, Cousin Angelica, Cría Cuervos, Carmen, Tango, and Goya in Bordeaux.
