About

Newly ordained and ambitious, Father Amaro arrives in the small Mexican town of Los Reyes to assist the established parish priest, Father Benito. Initially idealistic, Amaro soon discovers that the local church is entangled in political influence, financial compromise, and personal scandal. Benito maintains a longstanding affair with Sanjuanera, the mother of Amelia, a young woman who teaches catechism and is deeply devoted to her faith. Meanwhile, the church accepts financial support from a powerful drug trafficker to fund the construction of a local hospital. Amaro becomes increasingly attracted to Amelia, and their relationship develops into a secret affair that places his religious vocation and public standing in direct conflict with his desires. As their intimacy deepens, he finds himself caught between personal passion, institutional loyalty, and the need to protect his position within the church. The situation grows more complicated when Father Natalio, a priest sympathetic to left-wing insurgents, comes under scrutiny from the ecclesiastical authorities. When Amelia becomes pregnant, Amaro attempts to conceal the consequences of their relationship. His efforts to preserve his reputation lead to a series of morally compromising decisions with devastating results. As the truth is suppressed and the community is offered a carefully manipulated account of events, the film exposes the disparity between the church’s public moral authority and the conduct of those who serve it.
