The Mad Fox , also titled Love, Thy Name Be Sorrow, is a 1962 Japanese jidaigeki (period drama) film directed by Tomu Uchida. It is based upon a 1734 bunraku play (traditional Japanese puppet theater). During the Heian period, the fortune-teller Kamo no Yasunori foretells that he must adopt a girl named Sakaki, who later becomes caught in a deadly struggle over his succession after his murder. Betrayed by the ambitious Doman and driven mad by Sakaki's death, Yasuna flees with the prophetic scroll The Golden Crow. Mistaking Sakaki's twin sister for her, he eventually falls in love with Kon, a fox spirit disguised as the twin. Their brief happiness ends when Kon reveals her true identity and disappears, leaving Yasuna with their child and the scroll. The story concludes ambiguously, suggesting the romance may have been an illusion and ending with a warning about the emptiness of love. (source: wikipedia)
