Description

Macunaíma is a1969 Brazilian film in the comedy and fantasy genre, written and directed by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade and based on the novel of the same name by Mário de Andrade. It stars Paulo José , Dina Sfat , Jardel Filho, Milton Gonçalves, and Grande Otelo in the main roles. The film follows the story of Macunaíma, a lazy anti-hero , described as a "hero of these people," a "hero without any character," and also a "representative of the Brazilian people," an indigenous man who is born black and, as an adult (Grande Otelo) in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, becomes white (Paulo José) and goes to the big city, meeting prostitutes, guerrillas, and facing various types of enemies he encounters along the way. In November 2015, the film was included in the Brazilian Association of Film Critics (Abraccine) list of the 100 best Brazilian films of all time.
