Joaquim Pedro de Andrade
Joaquim Pedro de Andrade (1932–1988) was a Brazilian director and screenwriter, one of the central figures of Cinema Novo. The son of the modernist writer Mário de Andrade and trained at IDHEC in Paris, he combined an extensive knowledge of Brazilian literature and music with a politically and erotically uninhibited filmmaking sensibility. His feature Macunaíma is widely regarded as one of the canonical works of Brazilian cinema. His acclaimed films include Garrincha, Joy of the People, The Priest and the Girl, Macunaíma, The Conspirators, Conjugal Warfare, and The Man of the Wood.
