About

A Town of Love and Hope (Alternative title: A Street of Love and Hope) is the feature-film debut of Nagisa Ōshima. The film examines poverty, social inequality, and the limitations imposed on young people by Japan’s class system during the postwar period. Masao, a junior-high-school student living in an impoverished industrial district, struggles to support his sick mother and younger sister. To earn money, he repeatedly sells his sister’s pet pigeons, knowing that the birds will eventually return home, allowing him to sell them again. His scheme attracts the attention of Kyōko, a wealthy young woman who purchases a pigeon out of sympathy for his circumstances. Believing that Masao deserves a better future, she attempts to help him obtain a job at her father’s company. However, when his deception is discovered, her sympathy turns to resentment, and Masao loses his opportunity to escape poverty. Their relationship deteriorates, exposing the deep divisions separating the privileged from the disadvantaged.
