Nagisa Oshima

Nagisa Oshima (1932–2013) was a Japanese director and a leading figure of the Japanese New Wave. Trained in law and political science at Kyoto University, he joined Shochiku studios in the 1950s and quickly established himself as the most politically confrontational filmmaker of his generation, breaking with conventional studio storytelling to address Japan's postwar identity, sexuality, and the legacies of imperialism. He helped found his own production company to retain artistic control. His acclaimed films include Cruel Story of Youth, Death by Hanging, The Ceremony, In the Realm of the Senses, and Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.
