Vera Chytilová

Věra Chytilová (1929–2014) was a Czech director and screenwriter, one of the most important figures of the Czechoslovak New Wave. She studied architecture and worked as a fashion model and clapper-girl before training at FAMU, and her films stood out for their combative engagement with women's lives in a male-dominated society. Banned from filmmaking for much of the 1970s after the Soviet-led invasion, she returned to active work in the 1980s. Her acclaimed films include Something Different, Pearls of the Deep, Daisies, Fruit of Paradise, The Apple Game, Calamity, and Traps.
