Kaneto Shindo
Kaneto Shindo (1912–2012) was a Japanese director, screenwriter, and producer with a career that spanned more than six decades. Born in Hiroshima, he worked as an art assistant at Shochiku before establishing himself as one of postwar Japan's most prolific screenwriters and then co-founding an independent production company that freed him to direct outside the major studios. His features ranged from socially engaged dramas about poverty and the atomic bombings to stylized folk horror. His acclaimed films include Children of Hiroshima, The Naked Island, Onibaba, Kuroneko, and Postcard.
