Berlin School

The Berlin School is a movement in contemporary German cinema that emerged in the 1990s and became particularly influential in the 2000s.

The movement's filmmakers often portray alienation, displacement, emotional isolation, precarious work, fractured relationships, and the difficulties of contemporary European life. Rather than presenting Germany through historical spectacle or conventional social drama, they examine the tensions and uncertainties of everyday existence in a reunified Germany and an increasingly globalized Europe.

The Berlin School is not a strictly defined aesthetic or organized collective. The term was originally used by critics and later adopted more broadly to describe a loosely connected generation of filmmakers whose work shared certain approaches.

Important figures include Christian Petzold, Angela Schanelec, Thomas Arslan, Maren Ade, Christoph Hochhäusler, Benjamin Heisenberg, Valeska Grisebach, and Maria Speth. Their films vary considerably, but they share an interest in observational filmmaking, psychological ambiguity, and understated social realism.

The movement is sometimes divided into an earlier generation, associated particularly with Petzold, Schanelec, and Arslan, and a second generation that includes filmmakers such as Ade, Hochhäusler, Grisebach, and Heisenberg. Although their films rarely resemble one another exactly, the Berlin School helped establish a distinctive form of European art cinema rooted in contemporary German experience.
