Shirin (2008)

Director: Abbas Kiarostami

Country: Iran

Award: none

Movement: Iranian New Wave

Description

The film consists entirely of close-up shots of several prominent Iranian actresses, along with French actress Juliette Binoche, as they watch a film inspired by the partly mythological Persian love story of Khosrow and Shirin, a tale centered on themes of female self-sacrifice. Rather than showing the film itself, the work captures the viewers’ emotional responses to the unfolding narrative. The story is conveyed through narration that moves between tragedy and melodrama, led by Manoucher Esmaieli, and is complemented by a historical score composed by Morteza Hananeh and Hossein Dehlavi.
