About

The story follows Isaburō Sasahara, an aging samurai who has spent his life serving his clan lord while enduring an unhappy marriage and a restrictive existence. His life changes when the lord orders his son, Yogoro, to marry Ichi, a former mistress who has fallen out of favor at court. Although the marriage is initially imposed upon them, Yogoro and Ichi gradually develop genuine affection and build a happy family. Their contentment is shattered when the lord abruptly demands that Ichi return to his household. Refusing to surrender his wife, Yogoro defies the order, while Isaburō, initially reluctant to challenge the authority he has served for decades, ultimately joins his son in resisting the unjust command. Their decision places the entire family in danger and transforms a private dispute into a confrontation with the oppressive power of the ruling clan. The film received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1967 Venice Film Festival and was recognized as one of the leading Japanese films of its year.
