About

Entranced Earth is a 1967 Brazilian Cinema Novo drama film directed by Glauber Rocha. The film is an allegory for the history of Brazil in the period 1960–1966. In the fictional Republic of Eldorado, idealistic journalist and poet Paulo Martins becomes entangled in a political struggle between conservative elites and populist reformers. After supporting the progressive candidate Felipe Vieira, Paulo grows disillusioned when Vieira proves unable to challenge the economic forces controlling him. Returning to the capital, Paulo exposes the growing influence of foreign corporate interests and joins Vieira’s presidential campaign, using the media to oppose the conservative Porfírio Diaz. When businessman Júlio Fuentes ultimately betrays them and allies with Diaz, Paulo turns toward armed resistance, while Vieira abandons the political struggle.
