About

Alain Fleischer’s Dehors-dedans (1975) is an experimental film centered on a young woman (Catherine Jourdan) living in isolation in a Parisian attic. Her private fantasies and rituals are juxtaposed with images of Paris, its monuments, and passages from Jules Michelet’s History of the French Revolution. Through this opposition between interior and exterior, private experience and collective history, Fleischer examines the relationship between individual desire and broader political and cultural narratives. Combining performance, erotic imagery, historical text, and urban observation, the film resists conventional narrative form and exemplifies the experimental tendencies of 1970s French cinema. Presented in the Perspectives du cinéma français section at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival, the film also attracted controversy for its erotic content and was released in France with an 18-and-over restriction.
