About

Apur Sansar (The World of Apu), the final installment of Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy, follows Apu into adulthood. A university graduate struggling with unemployment, he dreams of becoming a writer while living in modest circumstances in Calcutta. When his friend Pulu invites him to a village wedding, an unexpected turn of events leads Apu to marry the bride, Aparna, after the original bridegroom proves mentally unstable. Their initially unconventional marriage develops into a loving relationship, bringing Apu happiness and a renewed sense of purpose. Their happiness is short-lived, however. Aparna dies in childbirth, leaving Apu devastated. Overwhelmed by grief, he abandons his newborn son, Kajal, and withdraws from society, wandering aimlessly and rejecting his responsibilities. Years later, Apu finally confronts his loss and reunites with his son. Their reconciliation offers the possibility of healing and a new beginning, as Apu accepts fatherhood and the responsibilities of life.
