Amerikai Anzix
About
In the final days of the American Civil War, an emigre Hungarian military officer attempts to map the situation of the enemy. Many veterans of the 1848 War of Independence in Hungary fought on the northern side. Experienced Fiala, Boldogh who struggles with homesickness and the reckless Vereczky all experience their enforced emigration in different ways and news of impending peace elicits different reactions from them all. (source: TMDB) The images of the American Anzix, shot in black and white, reminiscent of damaged, scratched, torn film, the white film frame inserted in place of the cuts (the so-called light cut), the freezes, frame cuts, slow motions, distorted sound recordings, and the starting and then stopping contemporary music (including a Liszt piano piece) all create the effect of watching a film artifact from the mid-19th century, when cinema had not yet been invented. We often follow the scenes through the crosshairs of the main character's theodolite, and the auxiliary lines of his measurements also appear on the screen, as if they were the fate lines of the characters. Bódy vividly called the experimental filming method a "second look", when the material recorded in the usual way was "re-shot" on the trick table: this is when the effects listed above were added and the final form of the work was formed.
