Zoltán Várkonyi
Zoltán Várkonyi (1912–1979) was a Hungarian director, actor, and theatre administrator, one of the most prominent figures in postwar Hungarian popular cinema. Trained as a theatre actor, he made the transition to film direction in the 1950s and became known for a string of large-scale historical and literary adaptations drawing on classic Hungarian novels by Mór Jókai and Géza Gárdonyi. He was also a celebrated director of the Vígszínház theatre in Budapest. His acclaimed films include The Bridegroom Is Coming, A Husband for Susy, Bitter Truth, Stars of Eger, and the historical epic Hungarian Nabob and Zoltán Kárpáthy.
