Wu Tianming
Wu Tianming (1939–2014) was a Chinese director and producer regarded as the godfather of the Fifth Generation of Chinese cinema. As the head of the Xi'an Film Studio in the mid-1980s, he gave many of the major Fifth Generation directors — Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Tian Zhuangzhuang — their first opportunities to direct features. As a director himself he made socially serious features about ordinary Chinese lives, particularly the painter and folk-art figures of his Xi'an region. His acclaimed films include Life, Old Well, The King of Masks, and The Songsters of Erquan.
