Tony Richardson
Tony Richardson (1928–1991) was a British director and producer, a central figure of the British New Wave and the so-called Free Cinema movement. After studies at Oxford and a stint directing for the BBC, he co-founded the production company Woodfall Film Productions and championed the work of the angry young men playwrights and novelists of late-1950s Britain. His features brought a kitchen-sink realism and a stylized, modernist energy to British cinema. His acclaimed films include Look Back in Anger, The Entertainer, A Taste of Honey, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Tom Jones (which won the Academy Award for Best Picture), Mademoiselle, and Hamlet.
