Teinosuke Kinugasa

Teinosuke Kinugasa (1896–1982) was a Japanese director, one of the most distinctive figures of pre-war Japanese cinema. His silent feature A Page of Madness, made outside the studio system, was lost for decades and is now considered a masterpiece of silent cinema. His feature Gate of Hell won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His acclaimed films include A Page of Madness, Crossroads, The Loyal 47 Ronin of the Genroku Era, and Gate of Hell.
