Sergei Einsenstein
Sergei Eisenstein (1898–1948) was a Soviet director and theorist regarded as the central figure of Soviet montage cinema and one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of the medium. Trained as an engineer before turning to revolutionary theatre, he developed a theory of editing that treated the cut as the locus of cinematic meaning, with collisions of images producing intellectual and emotional effects. His theoretical writings have remained central to film education ever since. His acclaimed films include Strike, Battleship Potemkin, October: Ten Days That Shook the World, Alexander Nevsky, and Ivan the Terrible Parts I and II.
