Sergei Bondarchuk
Sergei Bondarchuk (1920–1994) was a Soviet director and actor, one of the most prominent figures of Soviet cinema in the late twentieth century. After establishing himself as a leading screen actor in films by Sergei Gerasimov and others, he turned to direction with the monumental adaptation of Mikhail Sholokhov's The Fate of a Man. His epic seven-hour adaptation of Tolstoy's War and Peace won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and remains one of the largest-scale features ever produced. His acclaimed films include The Fate of a Man, War and Peace, Waterloo, They Fought for Their Country, and Boris Godunov.
